(abstract depressionism)
there is not one "THE BEST" compilation to me but these definitely had a deep impact on me... along with the CROOKLYN DUB CONSORTIUM and ELECTRIC LADYLAND series. |

What's that Jazz Satellites one? Is it another K Martin one? I would put Isolationism at the top of my list, but there's too many tracks that are just are a bit 'what have we got that hasn't been released yet'. The Koner track is amazing tho.
I've been meaning to get the Pop Ambient compilations for a while... are they good?
Here's another one that's kind of mixed quality, but just holds loads of special memories for me...

Yep, Jazz Satellites is another KMart great compilation - jazz avantgarde, even Miles Davis track is not typical one. Awesome tracklist: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Jazz-Satellites-Volume-1-Electrification/release/506295
Got my probably favorite Henderson & 23 Skidoo tracks ever here.
And Koner is always amazing. |

Pathological Compliation and Grindcrusher are cop-out answers I assume... and clearly any Avalanchers related one is also verboten for a reply?
hmm, tough one,
A Diamond Hidden In The Mouth Of A Corpse (Husker Du, Gira, Sonic Youth, Coil, etc..) didn't suck...
Sub Pop 200 when it dropped was pretty cool...
Isolationism: Ambient 4? |

| NSOTW and Grindcrusher both turned me on to countless bands I'd only really read about before. Don't think any other comps had such a dramatic effect on my record collection. |

Oh yeah, Grindcrusher of course - was pivotal for me.
I guess what I love about NSOTW is that it feels like a 'proper' album and not just a bunch of collected tracks - there's such a distinct lo-fi vibe to the whole thing. The only other album I can think of with the same eclectic but cohesive vibe is Virus 100, which has some cracking tracks on. |

Although Torque is more like a Nico Sykes and friends artist album. |

| I never really understood the level of appreciation Torque got - following on from the first Nu Black releases it just sounded kinda formulaic and I guess it did set the blueprint for the tech-step sound that went on to drain all the imagination out of jungle. |

It was already a year out of date (if not more) when it was released. I never bought it until years afterwards and even then I bought it on cd.
When Torque came out Andy C, Optical and even Krust had moved that sound on so much that Torque sounded dated.
Albums could not compete with the 12"s. |

This album annoyed me when it first came out. Artcore for godsake! Like all that intelligent Jungle crap. The tunes were fine but the shitty "Artcore" name that never caught on was def way to far up its own arse. |

Some of the cut-aways are brilliant on this - Lydia Lunch "Dear Whores, Fuck You!"
I need to find this again as I only had it on tape and I tossed all those many years ago. I used to have the kid screaming "please leave a message" as my answer phone message |

This one stands out from the hundreds of dance compilations for me. That Grooverider prototype years is another fine choice

Seems pretty unassailable at the top, but what about:
Macro Dub Infection 1&2
COLLISION COURSE (the bastard son of MDI)
The Susan Lawly Extreme Music From... series
North Atlantic Noise Attack
Shake the Nations
Foxtrot
Also:
It's not Intelligent, It's not from Detroit... but it's fucking 'avin it! Vols 1&2! |

| For me it's all about the first 25 or so Mind The Gap compilations. I've discovered so much amazing music through them. |

Yeah, I got that on vinyl when I was about 15 or something... did melt my mind a bit. Especially hearing Biafra doing his evil prankster thing for the 1st time when before I'd thought he was a pariah of right-on-ness & decency |
