You think? It all sounds so one-dimensional after hearing ambient metal and other post-punk influenced noise-rock offerings.

who do you mean exactly? are you talking groups like SUNNO? personally, all of that stuff bores me to death.

i meant if you like traditional metal and were into the heavier side of it, black and death metal definitely sounded new and fresh when it first came out. i guess it is a matter of taste. actually, a lot of the black metal guys from norway ended up getting into some experimental stuff, esp THORNS. that might be up your alley, but i don't know what you like.

Personally I found that metal in the underground in the mid 90's onwards became very stagnant and bored the hell out of me. Yes, there's exceptions but I drifted into other non-mainstream music styles.

When I listen to metal, 95% of the time it's stuff from the late 80's/early 90's. There are a few acts that came out after the mid 90's like Portal and their offshoot Grave Upheaval, who are mighty fine too.

I have no idea what nu metal sounds like... but for Godflesh the rot started with Selfless muah

You make some interesting points! As much as I like Pure it would be a perfect album if the first two tracks were omitted.

The GF cover of F.O.D. has me thinking this new EP will be something interesting!

Blip--didn't see that post until just now. Yeah-nice walk through your godflesh history for sure. I agree with alot of what you say. Like Ben, I could let the first 2 tracks on Pure go. i don't hate them by any means and they are great to hear live, but the meat of the album begins after those.

Was produced by Ross Robinson who happened to be the guy that discovered Korn, Slipknot and Limp Bizkit..
I never even knew that the dude from Korn and Mike Patton were guests on Roots? Ive listened to that album 1000 times and never heard them but the Wiki says its so.

Colin Richardson was busy with Carcass and Napalm Death at the time..

In 1991 Ross Robinson recorded for Fear Factory the pre-'Soul of a New Machine' demos, which came out ten years later under the 'Concrete' moniker.

He used these recordings to promote himself, helping him to be chosen by Korn to produce their first album.

So you have to blame Fear Factory (who where also massive Godflesh fans at that time) for this whole mess called nu-metal...

Oh wait!... It seems I've just demonstrated that Godflesh had still something to do with nu-metal!... Oh shit!!

Of course Godflesh had something to do with nu-metal. Mothra is the birth of it all.

No, bands like Scorn, Godflesh, Earth, OLD. Bands that were influenced as much by post-punk's minimalist, droning, electronically-processed, texturally-focused (rather than melodically-focused), abrasive deconstruction of rock as they were by heavy metal bombast. It is a complete seismic shift in listening to traditional metal which is rife with inviolate rules as to how the sound-field must be set-up and what can conceptually be expressed in the style.

I was into perhaps the heaviest side of metal listening to grindcore. While I don't listen to too much straight-up grindcore anymore, I'm most fond of it as it was such a capricious style that lent itself to experimentation. Black and death metal sound considerably more conservative, having been ossified within heavy metal codes (lyrical content, vocal styles, guitar styles, musical instrument considerations, visual presentation).

I'm into post-punk and noise-rock at heart.

It gets to about 3.00 and changes up into something, and if he gives it the full scream at that point it'll be such a payoff but it just holds the same and...gnashing of teeth...God just cut loose man haha.

Nice though. I just hope there's more angry vocals elsewhere on the EP to make up the shortfall.

somehow i am not liking it, as i said it on our fb page as well.

like joeki said, it is too "safe". or maybe i need to listen more. the ep will change our minds, i am almost sure about that.

I like that it's different.
It's definitely Godflesh but not like any of the prior records.
That's all I was hoping for. If it was similar to any of the old records it'd be stupid and pointless.
As it is, this points to something new.
And every record after Streetcleaner took me a while to fully 'get' and enjoy.
Selfless sat on my shelf for about a year before I finally really enjoyed it.

well the problem is it did not sound that much different to me Smile and it is hard to make ppl like us to make like it. if i were justin now i would be swearing a lot to this golem person but yeah, i was waiting for something more powerful and emotional. not geighsu like emotional, you get me. and trust me i am in a state that anything can make me cry or make me feel some pain deep inside my heart. i think ep will have better songs. or maybe i should shut the fuck up and let the fans enjoy it.

danmmit i wanna enjoy it too!!!

I like it, but I try not to expect to much out of a single song or even the EP. As was noted some of this EP is older stuff - I have the feeling this whole EP might be a bit of a catalog run thru.

Not that it bothers me any, soon as it started crushing my inner fanboi that likes AC/DC, Slayer, etc even tho they don't change much started going off and doing the headbang.

sounds like it can be slid right into something from the Pure/Selfless/Merciless eras. it's fresh but familiar at the same time. It won't get repeat plays from me, but I enjoyed it.

It's good and heavy, but yeah, a lil more aggression is always nice for the vocals, particularly since this is Godflesh, although some of my favorite GF songs don't have any screaming, but I love the last riff. So far reminding me of something Messiah-ish which is a fantastic e.p. that doesn't get much attention. Twisted Evil

i like it more this morning.

i suppose the baggage of it being the first new original godflesh song since they split up--the weight of expectation is now off of it on subsequent listens.

it's a fine tack. it's pretty fucking cool to be listetning to new godflesh in 2014.

of course, there's still part of me that wants to be stunned like the first time I heard streecleaner, or when expecting streetcleaner pt. 2 and getting Pure--both were "what the fuck is this? i love it!" experiences which is probably unrealistic to expect again.

it's good , though. still very much looking forward to both ep and lp.
