This must be the 1st official review and its pretty much spot on http://www.thesleepingshaman.com/reviews/album-reviews/g/godflesh-decline-fall-cdep-12inch-dd-2014/

I didn't want to comment until I had heard the ep all the way through. I've heard it two times now as my cd arrived via the medium of post this morning. All I can say at this point is that I'm impressed. I was a bit deflated when I didn't like Ringer that much but the other three tracks are all killer and very different sounding. There is a lot to like here.

Just cranked up my Bandcamp download... The 'swing' on the Dogbite drumbeat is very reminiscent of Pure, in fact the whole track is.

I was probably in a minority by quite liking Ringer...

First listen complete. It is...... not bad! The bass and drums are huge, some of the guitar will take a bit of getting used to, not overly keen on parts of it. Decline and Fall sounds like they're about to kick into some Mass Destruction! Nice!

But, the two dubs are GREAT!!! The Ringer dub kicks Ringer's ass and the cool outro bit features heavily throughout. Really like these two tracks. An argument could be made that they should have been instrumentals maybe but happy enough.

I really, really like the new e.p.

EP sounds like a Frankenstein's monster of Godflesh's mid-period material (Pure, a little Selfless), but yet derivative of them at the same time. The whole affair sounds like stitched together riff-based sections, very metal. To that end, nu-metal (ughhh) riffs in spots. Likewise, really dislike the Sepultura vox. Another thing that struck me is that the phrasing in other parts is almost converging on latter-period Voivod prog-metal. Not my cup of shit at all.

I'm not sure at this point Broadrick can evoke the sordid hellscapes of vintage Godflesh. He's kind of a content person it seems (fine by me, just don't try and recreate Godflesh). Hope the album is nothing like this. Bring in Robert Hampson of course.

I should say I streamed this and haven't heard the dubs.

Godflesh in 2014, I like this ep really much, a grower, I can feel they returned to the state of mind they were into 20 years ago, really instinctive and mental but with a modern aproach and a 2014 production.
It's not nu metal at all for me considering the 1st Korn record was already full of Godflesh influences in it.

Eh, don't see this as fitting anywhere obvious in their back catalogue really.
To my ears its the most overtly Killing Joke influenced record they've done.
F**king LOVE it.
Onto the dub tracks now.

Not disappointed at all. It only makes sense that it would be derivative of the mid-period GF since they are trying to pick up where they left off. Had this on rotation all day. Trying to keep my expectations low for the full-length in hopes of being pleasantly surprised. Twisted Evil

I agree with a fair bit of this. I think it does sound in parts like bits and pieces of other Godflesh songs and in parts does sound like stitched together riff sections (but isn't this what most metal tinged non-abstract music is like?).

I think any disappointment I feel here is my own doing. I still have this yearning for something as mindblowing as Streetcleaner, but the fact is Godflesh have not been that abstract anti-metal band since the day Pure was unleashed. This is what they are, a chuggah-chuggah "metal" band who play at a slower pace than most and with a variety of influences from industrial and noise to techno and d'n'b thrown in. What I'm getting most from this new stuff is not a hearkening back to the Streetcleaner days but its also not a retread of Selfless. There's something rawer and heavier, the production sounds bigger, the guitars are dirtier and not as horrible and polished as the Selfless stuff. As I mentioned earlier, when Justin and K-Mart wanted to really freak out they released Mass Destruction. This sounds like a Godflesh version of Mass Destruction to me, which can only be a good thing.

I don't like it all by any means. Some of the vox aren't tickling my fancy (although Sepultura I only know up to Beneath the Remains and this doesn't sound like any of that) and the guitar riff bits where he plays the higher notes over the bass I never liked that much back in the olden days either. But, I can sort of see what they were saying when they said the attitude is of old. They are still the heavy riffing band they were from 93 onward, but have brought in a heavier dirtier aesthetic which seems to come from even Napalm days maybe. Once I resign myself to the fact that we're never going to get anything like Streetcleaner again I think I'll be more at peace with the new stuff.

some truth in what you say

haven't heard the dubs yet, thus far "dogbite" is my fave tune, it reminds me a lot of "amoral" off "songs of love and hate", the intro riff in "playing with fire" is not to my liking....

I like the rough vocals on "decline and fall" though something about the harmonic paired with the drum machine/breakbeat workouts grabs me like a nu metal record for some reason.

this ep does sound sort of stitched together though, kind of like the merciless ep particularly "blind" and "unworthy".

hopefully, the new record will have some tracks where Justin just assaults with the guitar.

it's not shite, but this one will definitely take some getting used to. I'm looking forward to hearing the dubs, i ordered that version via ebay LOL...

Streamed it and ordered the vinyl.

So far I like it and I guess it will grow. I agree that it sounds like a mish-mash of all incarnations of Godflesh. To me, that's a good thing. If this is the first step of Justin getting the machine rolling again I'm happy.

I didn't get around to listening the free-download which I asume has the dub tracks. I shall do this tonight.

Haven't got much to add to the discussion. In summary, I like it. I am not disappointed that it doesn't really break any new ground in the realm of Godflesh but if the album doesn't build on what they have already done then I will be disappointed.

One thing I don't think anyone else has said, I would have loved to have heard what Brain Mantia would have done with this because I find the percussion really reminiscent of SoLaH.

Dogbite is really nice. BGs bass line is very cool.

Ordered the vinyl from the bandcamp today. Listening the whole album with the bonus tracks did impress me after all. I really enjoy the sounds though i would have wished for the feeling of the older albums. But it is a pretty solid release for me and i enjoyed it.

i liked the ep, playing with fire being my favourite track. it does sound like they have different mixes (bass power!) between them though to me. on one listen to the dubs though i found them very unremarkable and a bit throwaway...

Can you elaborate, because I am getting bits of everything between Streetcleaner and SoLaH and that to me counts as "older".

Is it only me or there are similarities with songs from the Us And Them album, in particular with 'Descent' or 'Us And Them'?...

Loving the BASS, and the first three tracks in particular. The dubs are fine -- not mindblowing, but nice to have.

I suspect that the third track dates back to the Messiah sessions.

No its not just you. Playing With Fire reminds me a lot of Us & Them era Godflesh without all the overt electronics.
