To be honest.. We've never seen Kaan and MJH in the same place at the same time have we? Hmm... |

This will be a day long remembered.
It has seen a new GODFLESH album.
It will soon see the end of the mystery of who MJH is. |

I agree with whomever is comparing Post Self to Us & Them....
Has there been any indication that Godflesh will tour behind this new album? My intuition is telling me they won't tour, because they didn't really tour behind Us & Them.... Is my correct on that last assertion? I definitely didn't see them on the US & Them tour and never heard any of those songs live, but maybe they just didn't tour the States. |

Us & Them is not my favorite Godflesh... but it's still Godflesh. And so far I like the new one better....

No...actually I won't feel better until you go listen to Us and Them 5 times in a row and then do a 3,000 word essay comparing Us and Them to Post Self...and then after that, admit you are wrong about The Wicker Man and then maybe I might start to feel a little bit better.... |

The Wicker Man is the goofy 70s hippie folk song of horror movies. Christopher Lee was entertaining, but the movie hasn't aged well and is kinda boring.

Y’all ready for some honesty?? Ok, bring on the hate, haha:
“Be God” is killer. It feels like Jesu - S/T meets Godflesh.
“The Cyclic End Dub”(BONUS) & “In Your Shadow JK FLESH Reshape”(BONUS) are awesome.
BUT, much of the album feels unfinished to me. Some cool ideas & sounds, but the songs don’t seem fully realized. I feel myself liking the starting point on a lot of the songs, but they don’t really develop.. I want to love it, but.... Am I the only one here that feels this? |

They toured for Us & Them, just not the US. I used to have 3 or 4 bootlegs from the tour but now I only have one. Luckily its the one they played Spite (Version) at. That was the end of their contract with Earache, Dig was probably being a dick about funding a tour. |

yeah--from your comments on the last album as well--i think we're hoping for the similar things in a GF album.
I do like it a good deal more than the last one right off the bat, though--and i suspect it'll grow on me more than the last one too. |

I didn't like the album before that at all, but I think Post Self is great. It's experimental, bleak, moody and crushing. The album's sound references a lot of eras in GF's career, and even references JKFlesh and Jesu.... I am very happy with it.
Glad he left the Messugah/metal influences behind...
edit:
At 3.45 in, "In Your Shadow JK FLESH Reshape" even sounds like Slavestate with a modern sound. Haha |

Agreed, it is miles better than the last album. Like I said, it just feels somewhat underdeveloped. |

I liked the last one, but I fucking LOVE this one. I hate to compare it to the past but this is what I wish Us & Them would've sounded like. |

Us & Them is my favorite next to Streetcleaner, so this one's a-ok with me. Right off the bat the murk on Post Self is so much more satisfying than the comparatively clean mix of the last one.
There seems to be a Stateside distro problem/delay, though, since the LP is nowhere to be found. But I'll make do with the download for now.
Between the dubs/versions from the last three releases there's a roughly 50-minute album's worth of that stuff -- it's a hell of a nice listen! |

It’s definitely growing on me with each listen... The hihat & snare are ridiculously loud, though!!
But man, it sure is growing on me quickly here..
The Cyclic End Dub is out of this fucking world.
& holy hell, In Your Shadow JK FLESH Reshape is amazing. |

Oh man, if I had hair I would've ripped most of it out over that. I had to just stop and go watch the Punisher. The best part was he kept talking to himself after I left hah. |

Liking the new one so far.
Agree about the claustrophobic atmosphere, IMO it shares that with Streetcleaner... feels much less predictable than AWLOBF and I like that it’s pushing at some boundaries and trying out some new textures despite being recognisably Godflesh.
I almost wish it hadn’t had that whole “less metal” pre-launch fanfare though, as that is definitely going to appear in every single review (even this one -doh!) and might change how people relate to it... after all, every Godflesh record had a kinda unpredictable change in style, except perhaps the last one...
Despite being ‘less metal’ (which I guess means ‘less riff based’) I would also argue it’s denser and more extreme than anything since Streetcleaner and S/T too. All 3 are really dominated by the bass and percussion.
Did anyone notice a (possibly coincidental) influence from Author And Punisher? I guess that’s an influence that goes both ways... |

There's something very Killing Joke 1982 / 1983 about "Mirror of Finite Light" too... Wilful Days anyone? |

Definitely hearing some strands of Killing Joke sprinkled throughout the album...I liked what I heard a lot...need a few more spins before a fully formed opinion though...definitely an interesting direction to take GF... |

Strongest tracks for my taste are:
Mirror of Finite Light
Be God
The Cyclic End
Mortality Sorrow
In Your Shadow
The Cyclic End Dub
In Your Shadow JK FLESH Reshape
If I had to pick a favorite 3:
Be God
The Cyclic End Dub
In Your Shadow JK FLESH Reshape
The opening track is by far the weakest on the album.
I give it a 7.5/10 overall rating.
A world better than AWLOBF.. This one will be playing for quite some time around my parts. |
