OBSERVE ORIGINAL DATE!

As a huge huge long time fan of Devin, I am very glad to learn that he is back, 3 years or so (and a child) from his last output.

One might think that this whole thing sounds pretentious and over-ambitious, but I believe that if anyone can pull it off, it would be Devin. In a way, being similar in age to him gives me the feeling that we are developing in the same direction in life, being a new parent and all. (Someone please stop me from sounding like an ass). I bought my the first SYL album when I was just starting high school, was fascinated by the chaos of 'Infinity' when I just started university, and mildly bored with a few of his later albums. Ziltoid was killer though...

http://www.myspace.com/devintownsenddtb

I skiped the teaser track, as it doesn't give a proper impression of any of the songs.

Apparently he shaved his head.

This should be interesting. He is not using any metal/rock musicians, who knows?

I loved SYL but his "solo" stuff doesn't really do it for me.

I didn't knew he was taking so many drugs until recently. I heard he is bipolar (had to be put in an institution once) and takes loads of antidepressants already, curious that he was so much into drugs.

I've been a fan of Devin's ever since I heard "Earth Day" on an internet radio station a few years ago. Ocean Machine was really good as well. SYL is okay as well, though I like ti when his stuff is more well-rounded stylistically, as with Ziltoid.

Hoping this will be available soon...

I tried to stay away form this thread but I just can't.

The Vai album and the production job he did for December's "The Maent Configuration" are the only things Devin Cowshed has ever done that interested me. Everything else is to put it politley, not to my tastes ...

I was going to post the longest post ever right here, but time is running.

1) The Vai thing is so over the top that it is listenable. But whether it is enjoyable is another question. Witnessing the following tour would have been something though, given all the stories of Devins behaviour.

2) I can understand why people would hate him, he is an acquired taste.

3) For the point above, I can prescribe 3 enjoyable albums: Infinity, Terria and City

4) I think that was it

Nikolaj '5) thankyou' HTP

I have just been re-listening to the SYL albums and they are so impressive, it's amazing. I hope this new project is as good as that was. As I said I just fear that when he is not deliberately doing something extreme he gets a bit corny, it sounds a little over produced or artificial for me (specially the stuff that's playing on his myspace), but in the end it's a matter of taste isn't it?

In any case, he has made some incredible, over the top, extraordinary music with SYL. City is a classis, I would say it's one of the best metal albums ever.

Don't forget Alien... his manic masterpiece.

WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!?!
I'M BEING COMPLETELY RATIONAL!!!
I'M NOT YELLING!!!
In every relationship there has to be compromise,
And GOD KNOWS every one of them has baggage!
I know I have MY issues,
AND WE KNOW YOU HAVE YOURS!!!

Additionally, concerning allegations of corn and cheese... yeah, his stuff is corny, but it always seemed to me that he knew that full well and was being sort of ironic about it.

Thoughts?

I don't know... What I mean is that when I listen to things like his solo stuff and Ocean Machine it almost seems like I am listening to really, really pre fabricated music, everything is over produced, like as if he was the composer of jingles for advertising, you know? It's an extreme thing to say, but he sound very much like a "product" to me.

SYL was so extreme that it mostly went beyond that, but even SYL after CITY seemed a bit pre-fabricated. I remember when Spielberg made HOOK and AI and his vision of the lost boys being savages with skateboards was just so ridiculous, I couldn't take it seriously, it was kitsch, and I was a teenager when I saw it. The same thing happened with Ministry and the "Flesh Fair" or whatever it was in AI, it was just the most stereotyped metal guys with motorcycles and bad-ass-ness you could imagine, it was a cartoonish version of what it really is. You just couldn't take that, it was kitsch, it attempted to be serious and failed miserably.

I fell a little like that regarding Devin's musical output unfortunately. It's all perfectly programed and packaged... But not only that. It's much more something I feel about his music than I can explain clearly, of course.

He's done some wonderful music with SYL, don't get me wrong. I love the albums. They are my favorite metal albums of the last 15 years or so!

And the videos of him playing above seem interesting!

So, I just watched those videos and wondered how long it was going to take Static-X to ask for their riffs back.

I see what you mean, or at least I think I do.

This is how I see it:

SYL - HAARHT: Two killer killer songs, and a lot of metal irony. A young guy going bananas

SYL - City: Complete honesty in all it's fury. I think his mental state around this time was pretty bleak..

Ocean Machine: Recorded around the same time as City, maybe just the other side of his bi-polar. Again, I sense no 'over-production' of any kind.

Infinity: The most over the top of them all, and one of my alltime faves. This album made him go crazy, and you can hear it. Man, the number of layers!

Physicist: Concept album gone wrong and Devs worst. Too man thought of a 'concept' when into this, and it falls flat to the ground.

Terria: A return to form and honesty. Some great great moments.

SYL - SYL: I don't know what they thought about here. Apparently a 'band effort' which is why it sucks. Lot's of irony, but no memorable music to back it up.

Accelerated Evolution: Like Tetra says, sounds good but is easily forgotten.

SYL - Alien: A return to form and Integrity for SYL. Close to the fury of city in parts, but not quite up there. Delibirately unlistenable, but I love it.

Synchestra: Same as above, the 'band' thing just isn't working (for me).

SYL - The new Black: The album that SYL should have been. Tons of self irony, but with huge and good songs. You Suck.

Hummer and Devlab: Dev's playing around with his computer. But The Hummer has some moments that reminds me a lot of Final.

Ki: I like it.

So all in all, I think that Synchestra, Physicist, SYL and AE fits your description Tetra Smile

End of blabber....

I agree with most of what you say nhtp. Need to get Ki, heard so much good about it.

I think disbanding SYL after The New Black was a wise choice. Left with a nice goodbye there.

My problem with DT's material particularly the non SYL material (which isn't bad) is that it's way to prog for my liking.

From the Devy tweet: dvntownsend: If this was 10 years ago, the making of a record like this would have put me over the edge. Now...pizza, tea and a movie. Feels great.

Ie, Addicted is finished, and will come our way soon. Yay!

I partially agree concerning his ballad phase but

early & latest Cave & Grinderman = TRVE

Also: Swans, Tombs, Unearthly Trance.

King Crimson = needlessly complex. There, I said it.

Now, I'm going to prepare my defenses. I expect another round of shifting alliances and all out warfare soon-ish. Time to test my new anti-Blitzkrieg gadgets.
